To Enhance Your Fitness Routine
Before temperatures start to really drop, fall is a great time to start a new fitness routine or to change things up if your regular routine has become stale and boring. To help you get started, we’re sharing seven activities to consider based on recommendations from the American Heart Association. As you already know, regular exercise is good for your heart—and so much more. (More on that in a minute.)
Speaking of getting in shape and staying in shape, it’s also important to follow a smart fitness routine for your heating and cooling equipment. When your system is fit, you’re more likely to avoid costly air conditioning repairs and heating repairs. Plus, your systems will operate at peak efficiency, improving your comfort and saving you money on your energy costs.
Now, about those fun pursuits that help promote fitness … We know you’re well aware of activities such as running, biking, hiking, boating and playing team sports. But you also might want to consider one or more of the following:
- Plant a fall garden. Tilling. Mulching. Lugging bags of topsoil. Weeding, Pruning. Harvesting. Whether you choose to plant flowers or vegetables, gardening is a lot of hard work! But the joy of tasting a veggie fresh from the garden or admiring colorful blooms is worth every ounce of sweat.
- Go shopping. Walking around the mall or your local shopping district can burn up a few calories and help you get your steps in. Even better, head to a nearby flea market to search for antiques and other treasures.
- Head to your local farm. From fruit to produce, some farms allow you to head out into the fields with containers to pick your own fruits and/or veggies. It’s another yummy way to get moving!
- Get up and dance! Look for fairs, festivals and other events offering live music that will get you out on the dance floor or games that will allow you to show off your skills.
- Go on a treasure hunt. Have you tried geocaching yet? It’s a super fun activity where you use GPS directions to find treasures hidden in your area by others. Searching for treasures using a metal detector is another great way to keep moving.
- Clean up your neighborhood. Put on a pair of sturdy gloves, grab some trash bags and go for a walk, picking up any litter you find along the way. The Swedish call it plogging. We call it great for the soul—and the environment.
- Go fly a kite. That’s right! Get in touch with your inner child by buying a kite that makes you smile and then flying it at a local park or other open space on a beautiful day.
