You Don’t Want to Start the Warm Season Unprepared
While it’s still crazy cold in our little corner of the world, we’re here to remind you that spring isn’t far off. Smart homeowners know that thinking ahead is the key to smooth transitions from season to season. With that in mind, we’re listing 10 important tasks you should tackle this month—or soon!
- Tune up your air conditioner. While there’s still plenty of cold weather in the forecast, warm temperatures are just around the corner. That’s why March is the ideal time to schedule your AC maintenance. If you do, you won’t be caught off guard when that first unexpected wave of hot weather arrives. (And it will!) Plus, you’ll be fully prepared for whatever the rest of the summer has in store for you.
- Don’t forget your furnace filter! As we’ve already mentioned, our cold winter days aren’t over yet. And a clean air filter is one of the keys to smooth, reliable furnace operation. So, if you last changed your furnace filter in December or earlier, it’s time. For your convenience, you can purchase new furnace filters from our online shop.
- Clean the garbage disposal. If you haven’t already, you should actually make this part of your monthly cleaning routine. After making sure the disposal is off, use a bottle brush to clean the opening. Does your disposal smell awful? Freeze vinegar in ice cube trays and then let your disposal turn them into slush. Make sure to keep the cold (not hot) water running during this process. If you use hot water, grease in the disposal can melt and then solidify in your pipes to create clogs. Need professional help? We’re here for you!
- Clean your shower head. If your shower head is clogged with mineral deposits, the water flow will be weak and uneven. You might be able to solve this problem by soaking your shower head in a solution of half-water/half-vinegar. If that doesn’t work, call us! We’ll get to the bottom of your problem!
- Check for plumbing leaks. You can lose thousands of gallons of water from even a small leak. If your water bill has increased with no reasonable explanation, you could have a plumbing leak. At Matheson, our trained plumbers can find it and fix it fast.
- Clean your gutters. Over the fall and winter, a lot of gunk can collect in your gutters, including leaves, twigs, pine needles and more. Our rainy season is just around the corner so you want your gutters to be debris-free and ready to properly channel water run-off. When water can’t flow freely in your gutters and downspouts, it can damage your home’s siding and foundation.
- Clean up your yard. You should also make sure your yard is free of leaves, twigs, stones and other debris.
- Clean the siding. Wash away the dirt and grime of winter to prevent mildew and other problems that can force you to replace your siding faster than you want.
- Don’t forget to hit the deck! Remove debris from your outdoor decks, especially between the boards. Make sure there are no loose boards or nails that aren’t securely in place.
- Check out your water heater. You don’t want a busted water heater to flood your basement, do you? Even a small leak can cause damage to your floors. We specialize in water heater leaks and other repairs.
